Pre or Post Surgery massage
There are many benefits to having Lymphatic Drainage Massage (LDM) pre and post-surgery – be it elective or cosmetic surgery. We have listed these below along with our recommendations on treatment timings and the number of treatments that may be required.
Benefits of pre-surgery lymphatic draining massage includes:
- Prepares tissue for the surgery
- Facilitate the immune system
- Stimulate drainage of toxins and excess fluid
- Reduce recovery time from anaesthetic
- Boost the immune system
- Induces a state of relaxation; promotes parasympathetic response
It is recommended to have 3, weekly treatments; the 3rd to be 1 or 2 days before surgery if possible.
Benefits of post-surgery lymphatic draining massage includes:
- Decrease swelling, bruising, pain and inflammation
- Shorten recovery time
- Improve range of motion
- Improve scar tissue
Lymphatic Drainage is recommended twice weekly, 6 to 8 weeks post surgery. Each client is individual and this can vary. Treatment can start once your incisions are no longer leaking fluid.
We commonly treat clients post cosmetic surgery (plastic surgery), liposuction, hip or knee replacements, knee surgery and foot surgery.
What to expect during your treatment:
Lymphatic Drainage Massage involves slow, gentle strokes and should not be painful, due to working with the superficial lymphatic system, which lays just under the skin.
Depending on swelling and fibrosis, we may also use cold laser, cupping and/or taping to gain best results. Permission is gained from the client before any additional methods are used in conjunction with manual therapy.
Please wear/bring your compression garments to your appointment.
